Problem Statement

Develop three topics of interest and three approaches to refine them. Propose methods to address these topics and create a final product that aligns with them. The product doesn't have to be digital; it can also be physical. Additionally, if feasible, design a single product that integrates all three topics and methods, ensuring it serves the overall purpose effectively and harmoniously.

Introduction

For our Cross Media Design assignment, I aimed to create a tool combining health, nutrition, and visual progress tracking, while my classmate Rajeswari Jayakumar explored her passion for Indian art, jewelry, and creativity. Her vision of incorporating traditional Indian aesthetics into functional items intrigued me, and at our professor's suggestion, we collaborated. Initially, we focused on Indian art-inspired plates, merging my focus on food with her refined concept. However, realizing the design lacked versatility, we pivoted to an Indian art-inspired spice box, blending cultural celebration with functionality. To enhance the project, we conceptualized "Aroma Tales," a companion app offering spice box purchasing, recipes, and community engagement. This collaboration celebrated Indian culture and connected people through food and art.

Journey

Chapter 1: Three Passions Collide

Picture this: The assignment starts with everyone picking three subjects they love or thinks passionate about.

Vaibhav(Mine)Food, Fitness, and Photography. I had this grand vision of creating an app that would be your personal health companion - showing you what to eat, how to exercise (especially if you're recovering from injury), and tracking your progress through daily photos.

On the other side of the classroom, there was Rajeswari with her three amazing passions - Art as Therapy, Indian Art Forms, and Jewelry. She was dreaming up ways to bring Indian art into everyday life through jewelry designs, artistic plates, and beautiful textiles. Talk about creative!

Chapter 2: The Plot Twist

Here comes the first dramatic turn - our professor takes one look at our ideas and ask us to rips them apart! Two of Vaibhav’s subjects? Gone. Two of Raji's subjects? Also gone! But instead of letting us sulk, he had an ace up his sleeve. "You two should work together," he said, pointing between us. Why? He saw something brilliant - how Vaibhav’s food focus could perfectly match with Raji's artistic plate designs. Sometimes the best partnerships start with a little chaos!

Chapter 3: The Great Experiment

The First Try: Food as Art

We thought, "Hey, let's make actual plates with beautiful food arrangements!" Sounds perfect, right? Well, until we realized beautiful food doesn't stay beautiful for very long...

The Fancy Menu Adventure

Then we pivoted to creating this super premium restaurant menu. Picture this: gorgeous food presentations meets scientific precision - every protein, every calorie, all wrapped up in artistic beauty. But something still wasn't quite clicking...

The Bento Plate Dream

Our next brilliant idea? A plate with sections, each decorated with stunning Indian art. Only problem? Put food on it and... goodbye beautiful artwork! Back to the drawing board...

The "Almost Hollywood" Moment

This is when we discovered something mind-blowing - projection mapping! Imagine your plate coming alive with animations: farmers harvesting, chefs cooking, all dancing across your dinner table. It was magical and completely impossible for us to actually make. But hey, dream big, right?

Chapter 4: The Lightbulb Moment

Sometimes the best ideas come when you stop trying so hard. That's when it hit us - a spice box! But not just any spice box. We're talking about a beautiful piece of Indian culture you can actually use in your kitchen. And why stop there? Let's create an app that brings this whole experience to life!

The Development of the Application - The Concept Behind Aroma Tales

The name Aroma Tales captures the essence of what we aimed to create: a platform that shares stories through the aroma of Indian spices. We designed the application to revolve around our spice box as the central product, with additional features to create an immersive and interactive experience. Our goal was to build a bridge between functionality and cultural exploration. The app not only allows users to purchase the spice box but also offers curated recipes, access to individual spices and raw materials, and a collaborative community for culinary enthusiasts.

Through Aroma Tales, we want users to explore the beauty of Indian spices, experiment with their flavors, and connect with others who share their passion for cooking. The application is designed to make the spice box a daily companion, encouraging users to try new recipes, learn more about the spices, and engage with a global community.

How We Designed the Application?

The visual identity of Aroma Tales reflects the artistic inspiration of the spice box. We used rich colors and patterns derived from Indian motifs, ensuring the app feels as culturally immersive as the product itself. The user interface is intuitive, with a clean layout and seamless navigation to ensure users can explore features effortlessly.

Few take-aways

Embracing Iterative Design

Your project demonstrated how initial concepts often evolve significantly through iteration. You started with separate ideas about fitness/photography and Indian art, then progressed through various concepts (plates, menus, projection mapping) before arriving at the spice box solution. This shows the importance of being willing to pivot and refine ideas based on feedback and practical considerations.

Value of Collaboration

The partnership between you and Rajeswari exemplifies how combining different perspectives can lead to stronger outcomes. When your professor suggested collaboration, the merger of your food focus with Rajeswari's artistic vision created something more innovative than either of you might have developed independently. This highlights how diverse viewpoints can enhance creative problem-solving.

Cultural Integration in Design

Your project successfully demonstrated how to meaningfully incorporate cultural elements into modern product design. The spice box wasn't just decorated with Indian art - it represented a thoughtful fusion of traditional cultural elements with contemporary functionality, showing how design can preserve and celebrate cultural heritage while serving practical needs.

User-Centric Development

Throughout the development process, you maintained focus on user needs and experiences. This was evident in how you evaluated each iteration - from realizing that food wouldn't stay beautiful on artistic plates to understanding that projection mapping, while exciting, wasn't practically feasible. This user-first mindset helped guide you toward a more viable solution.

Holistic Experience Design

The project evolved beyond just a physical product to encompass a complete ecosystem through the Aroma Tales app. You recognized that the spice box could be enhanced by digital features like recipe sharing, community building, and educational content. This shows understanding of how modern products can bridge physical and digital experiences.

Follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

For any software, whether designed for EdTech or any other platform, adherence to at least WCAG 2.0 guidelines is crucial. Ensuring that all on-screen elements meet AA criteria is imperative for promoting accessibility. Following these guidelines not only enhances the user experience for individuals with disabilities but also establishes a foundation for future updates. By incorporating WCAG 2.0 standards, the application becomes more inclusive and allows for ongoing improvements that align with accessibility best practices.
